1. Vacuum the olefin carpet as completely as possible. The suction of the vacuum cleaner should bring up debris from deep down in the fiber, making it more difficult for stains and spots to set in.
2. Remove excess liquid from polypropylene fibers by blotting with a soft cloth or paper towels as close as possible to when the spill actually happened. Quick cleaning up prevents water and other fluids from settling into the fibers. Sponge the staying liquid with a wet sponge and a couple of drops of meal detergent to lift minor spots.
3. Remove solid matter such as mud, dried food or paint chips from the fibers with a dull scraping tool before attempting to remove the embedded stain.
4. Cover discolorations, e.g., food, blood, urine, vomit and mud with a spray-on or liquid carpet cleaner or hair shampoo. Carefully rub the cleaner into the stain with a soft fabric. Vacuum the area after it has dried.
5. Treat stains that are oily in nature-- including makeup, chocolate, cream, crayons, butter and oils-- with a dry cleaning fluid. Blot the location with soft fabric and vacuum.
